Don’t Exfoliate Your Oriental Rugs!

Now I’m just as excited about exfoliation as the next warm blooded American man, but it is absolutely your area rugs’ worst enemy.  When dry soil gets on and in an oriental rug it exfoliates the surface of the fiber.  If you have rugs, they have soil in them.  And if you step on your rugs you are exfoliating or removing the surface of the fiber piece by piece.  The end result is a rug that is matted, dull or just plain ugly.

Think about each fiber on the rug like a shiny piece of glass.  It reflects light and looks so nice.  Then scratch that glass.  You can clean it all you want, it is still scratched.  As you grind the dirt into the rug it slowly and permanently ruins the fibers.  What can you do to protect your rugs?

First vacuum your rugs regularly.  Regularly should be like a bath, once a week whether it looks like it needs it or not.  At least every 6 months turn the rug over and vacuum it from the back.  This will knock soil out of the backing of the rug.  If you turn the rug back over and there is soil on the floor, immediately have the rug professionally dusted and cleaned.

It is recommended that you clean area rugs annually but no less often then every two years.  Unfortunately most ‘rug’ cleaning involves only wet extracting the rug to remove visible soiling.  That only turns the dry soil in the backing into mud.  Not at Champion!  We give your rug a professional dusting not just a vacuuming to remove the soil that is in the backing.  That gets out almost all of the damaging abrasive soils that exfoliate, or permanently scar the fibers of your rugs.
